This Advisory Board can provide direct and indirect support in complex matters through its extensive knowledge base. It can act as a sparring partner, but it also facilitates that up to date (academic) insights and expertise are available for use in projects. Further the members of the Advisory Board can provide through their specific expertise new angles and perspectives on existing industry problems.

Prof. Dr. Gerard Mertens

Gerard Mertens is Full Professor of Financial Analysis at RSM Erasmus University and research fellow of ERIM, the RSM Erasmus University Research Institute. He received his masters degree in applied economics from Radboud University and holds a PhD in accounting from Maastricht University. He is currently chairman of the Department of Accounting & Control. Prior to his appointment at RSM Erasmus University, he held appointments at Nyenrode Business School, Tilburg University and CentER, the Limperg Institute, University of Leuven and Maastricht University.

He has published frequently in national and international journals as well as the financial press. He has co-authored and edited several books on financial accounting, corporate governance and corporate finance. His research interests are corporate governance, executive compensation, financial reporting, and investor relations. Next to his academic achievements he also engaged in a business carreer. In 1999 he joined Van den Boom Groep, the largest Benelux advisory practice on Mergers & Acquisitions, as associate partner, and continued his carreer at NIBC Bank in 2001, where he teamed up with the Corporate Finance division. In 2002 he was appointed Director of the Research Institute.

In 2004 he left NIBC and founded Shareholder Support, an independent Dutch advisory firm that supports institutional investors. Key topics are amongst others: strategy, financial performance, corporate governance and executive remuneration. Shareholder Support serves the largest institutional shareholders in the Netherlands, among which ABP, PGGM and Robeco. Over the last 10 years he served as advisor to the government, chaired several committees and participated in several national and international research projects on corporate governance.

Dr. ir. Karel Kreijns

Karel Kreijns (1957) is Lector at Fontys University of Applied Sciences and Associate Professor at the Open University of the Netherlands/Ruud de Moor Center. He received a Masters degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology and holds a PhD in Education from the Open University of the Netherlands/CELSTEC. He is a former employee of Oce Netherlands, a producer of high volume copiers.

His current research focuses on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in learning and teaching using an ecological psychology perspective and a social psychology perspective. Ecological psychology considers the situational context and how the affordances in it affect human behavior whereas social psychology emphasizes group dynamics and how the behavior of the individual is affected by the group. He is also involved in research that focuses on how primary and secondary schools, and higher education institutions innovate through the use of ICT. In that respect, the effects of interventions in behavior change are studied using models that stem from the domain of Health Education and Promotion.

Karel Kreijns frequently publishes his work in national and international scientific journals.
